I promised my daughter and son-in-law for several years, that when we sold the Bed
and Breakfast, I would build them a 2 story combination storage shed and workshop.
This was delayed about 4 months due to my broken foot. I finally started it and
have included pictures of the shed below. It is 10 feet deep and 12 feet wide. The
second story will have 7 foot clearance in the center and 4 foot on the edges for
storage. There will be a set of barn doors on into the second floor for putting big
items upstairs as well as a ladder and a 2 foot by 2 foot trap door leading
upstairs from the workshop area. There is a set of 2 foot by 7 foot barn doors in
the center of the front wall. Their yard is on a slope in that area which had to be
allowed for. It has been a lot of fun building and we got some help from their
friends for free beer.
2 story shed
The base is 2 by 6's with cross bracing
There is quite a slope in their yard at this point.
Decking is finished
Flooring all done and cleaned off
I used the decking to build the 4 walls
horizontally.
Shot of a finished wall
These are 48 " anchors which are way over
sized for the shed, but I like to have a safety
factor.
Anchors are augur type and screwed
into the ground which is not easy.
Wall being stored on ground as another being
built.
Wall being built
Another wall
I did extra cross bracing for stability
Lots of help with the free beer
Starting to take shape
Walls are 12 feet tall
The gap for the last wall was about 3/8" too
small and we had to reposition the first one so
it would connect properly.
Installing one of the 6 lag screws at each
corner.
This was a 15 year old who worked very hard.
He used both hands with the hammer.
Floor joist up and ready.
Most of the ceiling/floor plywood down
In Florida, we have to use hurricane hold downs. I
used 1 on each upright framing member. (Twice
the code).
More hurricane straps
Even more hurricane straps
I realized that I had left out 2 uprights on the
framing for the upstairs barn doors. Left to
do is the framing for the roof ridge pole and
trusses.

Nancy in soon to be main door
Me admiring the pool and our work.
