Newmar is a quality coach maker and we were lucky to get to tour their factory, Many of the plants have closed.
President Noboma came here to give a speech touting the stimulus package and said if we needed to pass it to
drop their unemployment rate down from 16% one of the worst in the nation. He passed it and it is now at 18%.
They were going to convert the RV factories to making windmills and solar panels. That has not happened yet
and I doubt if it ever will. Newmar was making 20 coaches a day, 5 days a week for a total of 100 a week. Now
they are making 3 a day 4 days a week for a total of 12 coaches a week. They also make large 5th wheels
which are included in this total. About 85% of the remaining workforce is Amish and these guys were very hard
workers and hussled around. We did see them working on computers and on a lot of high tech stuff, It was a
very interesting tour. Some of the coaches we saw (Essex) sold for over $700,000.

We tried not to photograph the Amish due to their graven image belief.
The cut out all of the panels with a computer aided router system capable of handling a 5' by 12' piece of wood. The coputer knows the pieces to be
cut for a coach and determines which one to cut to reduce waste. It cuts out for 6 parts at a time. Very high tech and operated by an Amish gentleman.
it utilized vacuum holdowns and roller baring surfaces. Very amazing to watch.
It goes and gets the proper cutter (shown on the right margin) for the
job needed.
