Monkey Jungle
Nancy and her family saw the monkey jungle back in approximately 1956. It made a big impression on Nancy as
a monkey got a mouth full  of water from a tube and spit it though the bars, drenching Nancy's Mother. It was
hugely funny for everybody, but Nancy's Mother and when asking her where she want o go on this RV rip, she
immediately replied "Monkey Jungle". It had changed quite a bit in the intervening 52 years, but was still very
interesting. Hurricane Andrew really took down a lot of the trees in the park and many of the animals were
released. Signs of the hurricane are not real evident now except for the fact there are no very tall trees. Many of
the population of animals have been at the park breading for over 50 years. It was a very interesting trip. Lots of
non English speakers there and at the end we had some raisins left to feed the monkeys and tried to give them
away to kids, but couldn't make anybody understand us.
Finally back after 53 years
The animals are in a big communal cage and the people walk in
covered cages. This is a "crab" monkey that isn't afraid of water like
most monkeys. A troop of about 150 have descended from the original
6 brought in in the 1930's
Monkeys do not eat the fish, but go after fruit and eggs the trainer
throws in.
Going after a hardboiled egg
We are in the walkway cage and the monkeys are on the outside.
The monkeys drop down small dishes on chains and after you put raisins
in the dish, they haul it back in. They rattle the dish to get your attention.
