We came to Mackinaw City in about 1978 with my Mother and Father. It was a really fun trip. It was in
September and very cold. While taking a horse and buggy ride, my Dad kept stealing the cover blanket from
Mary Lynn. He had a "Ricky Riccardo" pencil thin mustache that my Mother hated. He shaved it off in the
morning and nobody even noticed until he finally asked if anybody noticed anything different about him. My
daughter said. "Granddaddy, you shaved off your mustache." We then went up into Canada and my Dad could
not make the French lady j understand what toast was, "You Know sliced bread that has been toasted!" .She
brought him a biscuit. He spilled sugar all over the table and we all teased him about it. He was good at
teasing, but not to good at taking teasing. All in all this was a wonderful trip that brought back a lot of
memories.
Mackinaw City
My grandmother, Hazel Larmon Richards, lived in Bowlinggreen, KY as a child and during the summers, her family took the train to
Petoskey, MI to avoid the heat. I can remember her talking about it. When Nancy and I moved to Portage, MI she told me all about it again
(and again), Well today we went thru it. Very nice upscale community with a nice waterfront and lots of upscale shopping and dining.

The bridge
In 1978 when we went there, we stayed in this motel. It had a heated pool, but the air temp was about 45 F. Everybody froze except for Mary Lynn, who
had adapted faster than the adults.

See bridge between coach and toad.
Bridge from our campsite
I will admit I had been a little apprehensive about the bridge for a long
while. The day before it was raining and 40 mph winds. Today it was great.
Some parts were very narrow due to construction.
We were glad to finally see this.
Up countryside was very pretty.
