Mackinac Island
Mackinac Island is a very unique place. We last went in 1978 and this time it was a lots more commercialized, but
still very neat. No vehicles are allowed. Everything is done by horse power, peddle power and walking. There are
several hundred shops and a 600 room hotel as well as many smaller hotels and bed and breakfasts on the island.
We are always looking for the small unique shop carrying handmade crafts. Unfortunately, we found many shops
carrying the Chinese made trinket stuff. Oh well, we had the Amish part of the trip in Ohio. The ferries are all hydro
jet powered and go much faster than our previous trip. The season was just winding down when we went and it was
very cold in the morning.
We took the hydro jet ferry over to the island.
The famous Grand Hotel. We were going to eat lunch there, but it was
$40 apiece and $10 just to view the porch which is the world's longest.
Church
There are no autos or trucks on the island. Every thing is horse
drawn or peddle powered.
Dappled Peurchions
There are flowers and gardens all over the island
One company has the carriage business and has about 400 horses on the island used for carrying tourist luggage, and supplies.
UPS even has a buggy for packages. The Grand Hotel also has a stable and many horses of it's own.
Isn't she cute.
A taxi.
A stone church built in 1906 from local stones.
Our only shots of the Grand Hotel.
The Governor's mansion. It was sold for $15,000 with a provision that
it could never be sold for any higher.
The $1 hayride or actually the manure wagon.
As a kid, I had a very similar model of this fire wagon which was horse drawn. Mine was metal as this was before they invented plastic.
