Every year we get a nesting pair of gallinule in the water grass off our seawall. Much of the time the nest (they build in the grass) will
get destroyed by the big waves. This year we had 4 chicks. We have only seen 3 lately and figure one got taken by the alligators.
They are wading birds and walk on the grass. Sometimes it looks as if they are walking on the water. Some folks call them the
Florida coot. They are good parents and there is usually at least one with the chicks at all times. About 25 years ago one came right
up to Nancy as she was working in the yard and walked right up her rake handle and pecked her. I guess she was too near the nest.
The alligators get a lot of them.
