We had an eagle pick up a Nile Perch that had been killed by the cold weather and take it up to eat on our dock. It was unable to get  good hold
and flew over to the yard near the seawall. He ate most of the fillets over a 10 minute period and then flew away. Eagle will eat carrion where
ospreys only eat fresh killed fish. The cold snap kill many, many of these Nile perch. The one the eagle had wasn't the biggest.
Right after the eagle left the turkey buzzards came in to clean up the
remains. There was nothing left.
We saw a heron catch a small water moccasin and eventually eat it. It took quite a while, but was very interesting. We have seen this type of thing
many times before. They eat an amazing variety of wildlife, from the smallest minnow to this large snake. It uses it's closed beak as a blade to stab
and kill the snake. I killed several of these myself when rebuilding our dock.
We have a statue of a Snowy Egret in the bird bath in our courtyard. Evidently this egret got a little confused and was walking around it.
It finally walked away
Nancy got these two shots of an eagle drinking some water this morning. He stayed there for about 15 minutes. We have 6 nesting pairs on the
lake as well as  many others on the chain of lakes and see them a lot. Still a thrill. They are very majestic.
Years ago, our neighbor put a bowling ball up on the stake dividing our property. Later he painted a face on it. Sadly, he and the face are gone, but
we left the bowling ball in place, A redshouldered hawk used to use it as a perch. Seems like it would be uncomfortable, but he likes it.
