We have had an eagles nest about 200 yards from our house since we bought it in 1986. Nancy got up to
see two, and adult and a juvenile out on our dock eating a fish. She was able to get some good shots of
them. The juveniles get their traditional colored plumage when they get to be sexually mature at about 4
years of age. Twice in my life, I have been lucky enough to see an eagle swoop down and hit an osprey in
the air and then swoop down and catch the fish he knocked loose before it hit the water. Eagles will eat
carrion and fresh where osprey will eat only fresh. The bald eagle is a truly majestic animal. It is 3 1/2 miles
to the other side from the end of our dock.
I missed a great shot of this redtailed hawk eating a snake on this post I had put down in 1988 to tie off my sailboat. He then came back later
and ate a huge frog. We see him pretty much daily and he is very interesting. Seems to like the post. I took these photos through our den
window on super zoom, but they turned out pretty well. Living so close to the lake is an adventure. I finished the decking on the dock today,
so jut the handrail remains. Will probably put that off for a few weeks and start doing my landscaping chores.
These two photos were taken November 19th, as the adult eagle sat on my dock and then flew away just as I was taking my
second shot. Very majestic.
These shots were taken on 03/01/09 from our den window. Nancy noticed an adult eagle on our neighbors dock eating a fish. The fish was about 2
pounds. The eagle ate it very quickly (10 minutes) and then flew to a piling just into the lake in front of our window. This was right when a weather
front was coming through and we had 25 mph winds. We are so blessed to be living in the same neighborhood with so many eagles. When we first
bought the house in 1986, seeing an eagle was a very unusual event. Now it is fairly common. We called Billy and Yvonne to tell them about th eagle
on their dock, but they were not there. The remains of the fish are still there.
Another couple of pictures of our hawk on the dock and in our post. He is very beautiful and very smart.
Lots of birds (3 varieties on our dock).
We have a 8 ft by 8 ft fish pond in our back yard about 35 feet from
the lake. This heron kept looking in it to fish. I finally covered it up. Now
he sits on the pot in the center.
