Door County WI Maritime Museum
The style of boat was famous in this area. We saw several in the water as
well as this pre WWII photo of one and a model.
During WWII the 4 ship yards in Sturgeon Bay built almost 300 Liberty Ships for
the war effort. This was more than any other town.
Fur trading was huge in the early years. An ermine on the left and a
mink on th right.

Wood burning tugs hauled the freight in the early years. Wood for ships
was a large market.

The upper floor showed the force of the Great Lakes storms.

Many of the early outboards were built in this area. While we were here,
the union at Mercury Marine accepted  30% pay and benefits cut to keep
865 jobs from moving to OK.

We took a wonderful tour of this tug boat built in 1919 and refurbished in 1956. Our guide worked on the refurbishing and then was a crew member for
his whole life. He knew the ship inside and out. It took about 10 people about 5 1/2 years and over a million dollars to make it into a museum. It was very
interesting except Nancy got a little claustrophobic. I was a real highlight for me.
